Presentationstexten i boken
Due to the very restrictive Swedish laws of serving alcohol in the 70’s there was hardly any rock clubs or pubs offering gigs. The core of the earliest “punk bands” in Gothenburg therefore founded Garageligan. This was a non profit, anti fashion, anti establishment non hierarchy cooperative of bands with the aim of making a gig circuit outside the very few commercial venues available. Industrial design student Håkan Sandsjö (drummer in founding band Bruset) was responsible for most of Garageligans earliest visual outputs. His inspiration transpires from Pop Art, Barney Bubbles, Dada and Soviet Constructivism which he mixed together describing it as “nostalgic futurism”.
Most of the posters were done very quickly, in an analog cut and paste collage technic, usually no more than 24 h from the first idea ‘til the finished printed product. This meant you were able to comment on news issues and everyday politics by including politicians, press cuttings etc in the images.
The inclusion of the Rat character in most of the posters was inspired
Savage Pencil’s comic strips in Sounds and NME. Residing in the sewers the rat were considered as the archetype for a rocker amongst animals. In a travesty of the use of razorblades in punk image an electric razor was photographed very close up with a repro camera creating the dotted patterns at the bottom of the Attentat sleeve shown here. Håkan nowadays runs his own advertising company Sandsjö Action.
